Making Biodiesel At Home- Very Easy Indeed...
All of us are aware of the growing popularity of Biodiesel. So, let's learn how to make Biodiesel at home. The process of making Biodiesel at home is very simple and easy. You just need to gather certain things from a nearby hardware store.
You would require 1 liter of vegetable oil, lye and antifreeze first of all. Also you need to gather some pieces of equipment that can help you make this clean burning fuel. These include a blender, some scales, a few plastic containers, some funnels, and some empty water bottles along with a duct tape, and a thermometer.
One thing that you should remember is to make sure that the equipment used is properly cleaned and thoroughly dried before the application. Also it is always better to handle the ingredients with extreme care.
Now you should start by measuring out 200 ml of antifreeze. This has to be then placed in a half liter plastic container. You can use the funnel for this. Now promptly mix the lye into the antifreeze. Remember that the lye rapidly absorbs water, so it pays to be not fast while you work with it. This is because if you are slow the lye will absorb some moisture from the air, thereby interfering with the biodiesel reaction. It is always better that you mix the two ingredients by covering the container and shaking it. You have to do this until it gets warm. This way the lye will rapidly dissolve into the antifreeze and will foam up as sodium methoxide. Wait for the sodium methoxide to be clear with no particles floating in it. Meanwhile you have to heat the vegetable oil to 130 degrees. Now you have to use a blender to mix this vegetable oil with the sodium methoxide. Mix it on a low speed for about 20 minutes. While doing this you should make sure that the cover is on tightly. Use a funnel to pour this mixture into an empty, 2 liter water or soda bottle. Afterwards you should cap the bottle tightly. You should then leave the contents to settle for at least 8 hours. After the product settles, the glycerin will settle at the bottom of the bottle. Above glycerin, there will be a pale liquid at the top of the bottle. This top layer is biodiesel. You should then carefully remove the biodiesel into a clean bottle or a glass jar. This is how you end up making biodiesel at home, without buying any processor or other large equipment.
